A new genus and species of characid fish from the Amazon basin: the recognition of a relictual lineage of characid fishes (Ostariophysi: Cheirodontinae: Cheirodontini) Neotropical Ichthyology
Bührnheim,Cristina M.; Carvalho,Tiago P.; Malabarba,Luiz R.; Weitzman,Stanley H..
Amazonspinther dalmata, a new miniature characid from the streams of rio Purus and rio Madeira, right bank tributaries of the rio Amazonas, is described as a new genus and species of the subfamily Cheirodontinae. The unique characters of the new genus and species are the three remarkable black blotches on the base of the dorsal, anal, and caudal fins, the anteriormost proximal radial of the anal fin with an anteriorly extended lamina entering the abdominal cavity, and the extremely elongate caudal peduncle. The reduced number of ventral procurrent caudal-fin rays (7-9), and the hemal spines of only posterior one, two, or sometimes three caudal vertebrae directly articulating with the ventral procurrent caudal-fin rays further diagnoses the new taxon from...

Redescription of Odontostilbe pulchra (Gill, 1858) (Teleostei: Characidae: Cheirodontinae), and description of two new species from the río Orinoco basin Neotropical Ichthyology
Bührnheim,Cristina M.; Malabarba,Luiz R..
Odontostilbe pulchra, previously considered species inquirenda in Cheirodontinae and doubtfully assigned from the río Orinoco basin, is redescribed with the rediscovery of two syntypes. Originally described to the Island of Trinidad, O. pulchra is widespread in Venezuela, the río Orinoco basin, in smaller coastal drainages of northern South America, in the Lake Valencia system, and río Essequibo basin. A punctual occurrence in the upper rio Negro, near southernmost headwaters of the río Orinoco, extends its distribution to the Amazon basin. Additionally, two new species of Odontostilbe from the río Orinoco basin are described.

Redescription of the type species of Odontostilbe Cope, 1870 (Teleostei: Characidae: Cheirodontinae), and description of three new species from the Amazon basin Neotropical Ichthyology
Bührnheim,Cristina M.; Malabarba,Luiz R..
The widespread Neotropical cheirodontine Odontostilbe fugitiva is reviewed, and three new species of the genus are described from the Amazon basin. A neotype is designated for O. fugitiva, from the mouth of the río Mazán, upper río Amazonas basin, Peru. Three nominal species are herein considered as synonyms of O. fugitiva: O. madeirae, O. drepanon, and O. caquetae. The three new species are respectively O. ecuadorensis from the río Napo basin, O. nareuda from the rio Madeira basin, and O. parecis from the rio Guaporé basin (rio Madeira basin). Among other diagnostic characters, gill rakers are especially informative in distinguishing species. Description of gill raker denticulation is provided for the first time for species of the Cheirodontinae....

Two new species of Odontostilbe historically hidden under O. microcephala (Characiformes: Cheirodontinae) Neotropical Ichthyology
Chuctaya,Junior; Bührnheim,Cristina M.; Malabarba,Luiz R..
ABSTRACT Specimens historically identified as Odontostilbe microcephala from the upper rio Paraná and Andean piedmont tributaries of the río Paraguay are reviewed and split in three species. We found that the distribution of O. microcephala is restricted to the Andean slope of the río Paraguay basin. The species is distinguished from congeners with subterminal mouth by the elongate body, usually 10-12 gill rakers on upper branch and smaller horizontal orbital diameter (24.6-32.8 % HL, mean 28.7%). Specimens from upper rio Paraná constitute two new species, diagnosed from other Cheirodontinae by the presence of mesopterygoid teeth, grouped on median portion and forming a continuous row. The new species are distinguished from each other by having...
